Critical thinking helps people to effectively soleproblems. The most interesting thing is that people who, someproblems successfully of fairly well using a significant level ofcritical thinking unconsciously. I purposively used critical thinking when buying my first laptop froma second-hand merchant since it was cheaper. The purchase of the laptop followed a smooth process that made surethat in arrive at my preferred model that was within my budget.Critical thinking involves several steps that ensure the correctanalysis of a situation and making the right final choice. First, Isought knowledge about the most appropriate laptop for use in bothacademic work and entertainment. I approached some of my closefriends who owned various brands of laptops and sought information onthe features, speed, memory status and the most importantly theprice. One thing I found out was the tendency of each of them to heappraises upon their laptops and describes them as flawless. However,an extended discussion of the machine’s operating features led meto realize that they had some minor flaws that the owners would notadmit as important. Most of them had low battery life, refurbishedscreens and hard disks. According to the owners, these were primarycauses of complaints. The information was necessary since I had noprior knowledge that repair shops could fix screens and otherfeatures and fail to inform the buyers of the modifications.
Secondly, I embarked on comprehending the information I gathered frommy friends. I had prior information on the demerits of acquiring asecond and laptop that, was of course, minimal compared to my budgetallocation. I sought clarifications from online websites on thedifferent parts that could be changed from a laptop without thebuyer’s knowledge. I finally chose a local merchant along the street and approached himto check on what he had to offer. In doing so, was setting the groundto apply what I had gathered from the various sources. I was aware ofhow sellers could influence an individual to buy the products bypresenting all their items as ready to meet client’s demands. . Theshop had various brands of computers with both new and used, and theyhad different prices. I also noted his silentamazement that I had so much information to the extent of himobserving that I must have used several machines in the past.However, the knowledge was a courtesy to my friends and theinformation I extracted from the internment. I enquired from on anyof the new parts and their compatibility with the model. Since thatwas my first computer, I was not leaving anything to chance to avoidearly disappointment.
After pointing out to my prefer laptop, I embarked on analyzing it tocheck on any pronounced defects that would render it as unusableafter a short period. I enquired from the merchants on the parts thatare easily replaceable without the knowledge of the buyer. Themerchant confessed that the laptop had a replaced hard disk. Afurther inquiry and analysis confirmed that it was compatible withthe original model. I was of the hypothetical statement made by themerchant that it did not matter whether a laptop had all its originalparts together, or they were replaced. I took this as an assumptionof which he knew too well that the incompatible component wouldresult in functional problems. I found no evidence in his words sinceI had information from credible sources. I decided not to play theknow-it-all, but I was very careful not to be swayed by his baselessbut business friendly assertions.
A detailed close analysis of the machine confirmed that it wassatisfactory, and it could serve my academic and entertainmentpurposes. However, I did not plan to pay the exact amount of money onthe price tags, and I requested for the exemption of a few dollars onthe original price. I pointed out to him the number of years themachine had been in use and the value lost during those years. I alsoinformed him on my fixed budget. However, I tried as much as possibleto give the nearest offer for the laptop. My informed buying behaviorseemed to have caught him off guard, and it dawned on me that he didnot encounter inquisitive clients every other day. The merchantaccepted my request, and I paid a couple of dollars less than theinitial price.
Finally, I paid for the laptop and became its second owner. Althoughthe process was long and demanding, I found it to be the bestapproach to buying an item or solving a problem in general. I took myneed as a problem that required an answer. I was in dire need of alaptop for both my class work and entertainment. Therefore, I soughtsuggestions from people who were in a position to give advice. Icritically analyze the suggestions they gave, and I noticed the partsthat were hypothetical and I resulted in seeking information online.When visiting the shop, I had all the information on what to look forI a second-hand laptop, and I applied this knowledge in engaging themerchant to help me choose the best laptop.
