Jones, D.J. (2007). Risk Reduction: Oral Care, Bacteremia and Critical Care. Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, United States.

2. Author and Sponsor (15%)

The author of the resource is a professional in the field of nursing. The author wrote the resource as a requirement in the attainment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy already accomplished a Master of Science in Nursing Administration. In the reference list, the author has provided two publications that she has already contributed. The author can be seen as an expert in the field of nursing due to her level of knowledge she has acquired and her contribution to the field with other experts in the field. The author has been sponsored by the National Institute for Nursing Research. I do not think the sponsor is biased because the agency was playing its role as a national agency.

3. Sources (15%)

The information presented in the dissertation has been supported by other references. The use of references that have been researched in a nursing database is an indication that the information is reliable and thus valid. Also, the information seems current because it used resources that were within a few years of publications.

4. Summary Appraisal (20%)

The resource has not missed any important information because it has been in a position to cover the three chief areas that entailed its specific aims. Moreover, the resource has also been in a position to cover the fourth area, which is future research.

5b. Summary 1 (5%)

The primary focus of this resource was to investigate whether toothbrushing has an effect of reducing an incidence of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP). In establishing this, the authors randomized eligible studies that focused on mechanically ventilated patients that received oral care with toothbrushing. The resource indicates that oral care involving toothbrushing against without involving toothbrushing does not mitigate the incidence of VAP.

6b. Summary 2 (5%)

The aim of the resource was addressing a potential gap in nursing practice associated with a lack of standardization of oral care outside of the ICU through engaging an interdisciplinary group so as to come up with a policy as well as evidence-based guidelines for oral care by using a validated oral assessment tool. The resource indicates that nurses have an important responsibility in offering oral care for care-dependent adults.
