George,S., &amp Thomas, S. (2010). “Lived experience of diabetes amongolder, rural people”. Journalof Advanced Nursing,66(5),1092-1100.

  1. What is the purpose of this research?

To explain the experiences andperceptions of self management of diabetes among elderly patientsliving in rural areas.

  1. What is the research question (or questions)? This may be implicit or explicit.

What are the experiences andperceptions of self management among elderly diabetes patients in therural areas?

  1. Did the authors describe the research design of this study? If so, give a description.

Yes. The research design involvedunstructured interviews involving open questions.

  1. Describe the population (sample) for this study.

The sample was 10 eldely diabetespatients. The ten patients were English speaking, eight AfricanAmerican and two whites. They had suffered from diabete for between 7and 39 years.

  1. Was the sample adequate for the research design that was selected?

Being a phenomenological study, thesample was sufficient.

  1. Describe the data collection procedure.

The main method of data collection wasface to face interviews.

  1. How were the data analyzed after collection?

Existential phenomenologicalinterpretation was the main method of data analysis used.

  1. Discuss the limitations found in the study.

Themain limitation of the study is lack of diversity among theparticipants, making generalization of the results inaccurate. Forexample, absence of men, diverse races and diverse environmentallocation. The method of data analysis is also a limitation.

  1. Discuss the authors` conclusions. Do you feel these conclusions are based on the data that they collected?

The author makes a detail conclusionof the article. The conclusion is mainly based on the finding of thestudy and its significance in the management of diabetes.Additionally, the conclusion makes recomedition based on thefindings.

  1. How does this advance knowledge in the field?

The main contribution of the articlein the advancement of knowledge is emphaising the need for clientperspective in designing self management programs for diabetespatients.

Hunt, C., Sanderson, B., Ellison,K., (2014). “Supportfor diabetes using technology: A pilot study to improveself-management”. MedSurgNursing, 23(4),231-237.

  1. What is the purpose of this research?

To determine whether Apple iPadapplication increases self efficacy, participation in self managementbehaviors and improves the outcome in employer sponsored programamong diabetes patients.

  1. What is the research question (or questions)? This may be implicit or explicit.

Does the application increase selfefficacy? Does the application increase partient participation inself management behaviors? Does the application improve diabetescontrol?

  1. Did the authors describe the research design of this study? If so, give a description.

Yes. The pilot study involved repeatedmeasure research design.

  1. Describe the population (sample) for this study.

The selected participant were 17individuals aged above the age of 19 and living with T2DM.

  1. Was the sample adequate for the research design that was selected?

Since it was a pilot study, the samplewas adequate.

  1. Describe the data collection procedure.

Data collection involved directassement of each participant by the researcher.

  1. How were the data analyzed?

The data collected was analysed usingdescriptive stastistics, mixed model analysis of variance andrepeated measure analysis.

  1. Discuss the limitations found in the study?

Some of the main limitations of thestudy are small sample and self reporting measures which may resultinto inaccuerate reporting. The use of the application as well as theresult of the study could have been affected by time constrains. Forexample, some aspects of the application were tedious and thus someentries could have been missed.

  1. Discuss the authors` conclusions. Do you feel these conclusions are based on the data that they collected?

Although the conclusion is brief, itis based on findings of the study. However, the conclusion does notrefer to specific findings of the study.

  1. How does this advance knowledge in the field.

The pilot study has significantcontribution in the advancement of knowledge in the field. The studyemphaises the potentials of modern technologies in the selfmanagement of chronic illneses.
