The role of Nursing Informatics

THE ROLE OF NURSING INFORMATICS 1

The current nursing practice involves the integration of variousapproaches to problem-solving through the application of knowledgeand evidence-based practices. Nursing Informatics is a specialty thatcreates a platform for the integration of nursing science, computerscience, and information science. It relay data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing (Bakken et al., 2012). The currenttrends of globalization and technological innovations stimulate theneed to have professionals acquainted with the practice in the fieldof nursing, and they have become primary contributors to nursingsciences. Health care institutions are embracing the use oftechnology with increased intensity. There is a dire need to keep theinformation on the patients confidential and ensure their safety.Integrating nursing informatics with evidence-based practice can helpto improve the care provided to the patients.

Discussion

Nursing informatics applies technology to knowledge in the healthsystems, and this helps them to point out problems expected to occurbefore they cause any damage. They use the electronic documentationsystem to identify the observable changes in patients’ status, andthis becomes a reality with to the presence of information. Followingpatients’ data helps in monitoring the effectiveness of theclinical procedures performed on them (Bakken et al., 2012). Nursinginformatics interprets the data and presents it to the relevantparties for appropriate actions.

Nursing informatics also standardizes nursing language to facilitatenew methods of documentation in electronic records. Not all theinformation obtained from a patient can be of use in their treatmentand monitoring their progress. Informatics comes up with guidelinesinform of templates that acts as a guideline for nurses to identifythe relevant information that is critical in treatment and follow-upof the patients medication.

The integration of knowledge from different sources as it applies innursing informatics helps to compile data on research studies, patient care data and the current best practices in nursing.Informatics programs from these findings become primary in theassessment of investment analysis, patient preferences, and datarelating to infections control. It contributes to a sustainable wayof settling crisis regarding the occurrence of avoidable errorsduring treatment (Bakken et al., 2012).

Nursing informatics is also responsible for the vision and managementor the development and implementation of communication andimprovement in information technology that is applicable in thehealth sector. It is the factor that identifies the gap that existsin the adoption of technology in the various nursing procedures andinforms the management on the best practices to adopt that are withina reasonable return on the investment. After the adoption of theappropriate technology, nursing informatics advises the managementand members of staff on the effective uses of the new practices. These facilitate to facilitate maximum patient safety and desirabletreatment outcomes (Bakken et al., 2012).

There are various changes occurring in the nursing environment. Themanagement of heath institutions strives to keep their staff updatedby introducing the new practices in their places of work. However, the juncture and the method with which the new methodologies getintroduced into the workplace determine their effectiveness. Nursinginformatics borrows from validated research methodologies to proposethe best ways of acquainting the nursing staff with the newtechnology (Bakken et al., 2012). Professionals assess the staff’slevel of preparedness and their perception to change. When theinternal factors have the capacity to support the intended change, nurse informaticists advise the management of the best time forimplementation. After successful rolling out of the practices, theprofessional conduct regular monitoring to ensure smoothness in theadoption process.

Nursing informatics will be a factor contributing to theeffectiveness of my leadership in nursing. Leadership involvessetting the tone for the other employees to follow as well as being arole model. Its attribute of being involved in what the followers aredoing makes it distinct from management. To gain the trust of thefollowers, nursing informatics will inform me on the appropriatenessand consistency of decisions with the current nursing procedures(Bakken et al., 2012). Therefore, I will not be in conflict with anyprovisions meant for the entire practice in all institutions.Secondly, as a leader, I look forward to keeping my followers currentwith technology and new procedures to make our work efficient.

Nursing informatics will inform my team on the best time to introducenew technology as well as making follow-ups ensure the achievement ofthe intended efficiency. Another important role that nursinginformatics will play in facilitating my role as a manager is theidentification of gas that exists in the institution throughreviewing practices in other institutions and the industry as well. Therefore, my team will be competitive in offering services topatients using the current and efficient procedures.

Conclusion

In conclusion, nursing informatics plays a vital role in health careby identifying the practices that can have favorable returns in theinstitutions. It also informs the management on the right time tointroduce a change in the workplace by borrowing ideas from researchand evidence-based practices. It can be an informative leadershiptool to enable the leaders to make informed decisions.
